Anthems.

As I write this little blog there is a teardrop sitting on the edge of my eyelid. I fight it back.

Don’t get me wrong. There’s nothing wrong. Everything is going ok. Going great. I still like to keep reading. To keep writing. To keep talking. But in preparing for this particular thought I was taken on a wonderful journey through my mind and remembered some fantastic experiences that I have lived or shared.

After a recent conversation with my brother I started to remember some of the great hymns and songs I have known over the years. These songs are like wayposts that I visited on this train of thought. Each one reminded me of a time or place where I learned it or sang it. And it reminded me of the places and people that I was with at that time.  We all have so many favourite hymns or gospel songs. And over the years and I have been reminded of a lot of them as I thought about these things.

As I mentioned in a previous post one of my earliest favourites was the old hymn “I love to tell the story which angel voices tell. How once, the King of Glory came down to earth to dwell”.

Another one that I had memorised at one point was taken from the Redemption Hymn Book, “I waited for The Lord my God. And patiently did bear. At length to me He did incline. My voice and cry to hear”. That hymn is actually taken from Psalm 40.

So many others…

“I Stand Amazed In The Presence Of Jesus The Nazarene”.

“Let the fire fall. Let the fire fall. Let the fire from Heaven fall”.

“Hold the fort for I am coming. Jesus signals still. Wave the answer back to Heaven ‘By thy Grace we     will’”.

There have been so many great hymns and songs. All which evoke such emotions of devotion, worship and reverence.

But one which has always struck a chord with me ever since I first heard it is “Goin’ Home” by Cliff Richard. This song tells what it is truly like for a Christian from a pilgrim’s point of view.

Goin’ home. I’m always goin’ home inside.

There’s an ache in my heart that I can’t hide”

In 2 Corinthians ch5 v1-10, Paul talks about our life here on Earth and our thoughts and desires about being with present with Jesus. He goes on to say that it is his own desire to be “absent from this body, and to be present with The Lord”.

There’s a line in the song which goes…

“I'm not saying You don't give me joy.
I just need more of You. How I love You”

That’s what the anthem should be for every Christian. To spend more time thinking of Jesus. To read His word. To pray to Him. And to desire to find out more about him.

And sometimes – Just to shed a little tear for His work on Calvary.
