Remember This One Thing.
I always enjoyed the movie City Slickers. It tells the story of three old school friends who worked together and occasionally still met up but their get-togethers had become stale and boring. So they decided that they needed to all go away on an adventure activity break. They decided on a cowboy themed weekend driving cattle across the desert.
During the movie storyline they were overseen by a haggard old cowhand played by the inimitable Jack Palance. His character, called Curly, was a rough, outback, wise old cowboy who seemed at peace with his lot.
During the course of the movie plot there was scene were Curly was talking with the city guys. They were talking about peace and contentment when Curly said that all they had to do was remember one simple thing. Just one.
When the city slickers asked Curly what that “one thing” was, he replied, “You’ll have to figure that out for yourself”.
And the same can be said of our Christian walk. All we have to do is remember one thing. Or to be more exact, remember one person. Jesus.
Our Bible is an enigmatic book. It is filled with stories, historical accounts, poems and songs and the wisdom of sages.
When we read a portion of it we soon forget a lot of the details and the only thing that is left in our remembrance is that God loves us.
Listen to Ruth’s reply to Naomi when she was advised to go back to her own people in Moab…..
Ruth 1:16 But Ruth said: "Please, don’t ask me to leave you, or to turn back from following after you. For wherever you go, I will go. And wherever you lodge, I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God.
Despite all the arguments and reasons of Naomi, Ruth was determined to go with her mother-in-law.
In the upper room before His crucifixion Jesus presided over the Passover Supper. His final instruction was to remember Him…
Luke 22:19 And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me."
And also…
1Corinthians 11:24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me."
King David remembered…
Psalm 20 (7)Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the name of the LORD our God.
The dying thief on the cross beside Jesus remembered…
Luke 23: (42)Then he said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom."
And through all of our salvation experiences the only thing we have to do is remember this one thing - Jesus Loves Us.
Everyone - from the missionary working in deepest war torn areas, to the parents bringing up their children, we just need to keep remembering to worship and pray to Him and keep Him foremost in our thoughts….
Hebrews 12:2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith,
He left the splendour of Heaven knowing His destiny
Was the lonely hill of Golgotha. There to lay down His life for me.
Even in death He remembered the thief hanging by His side
Then he spoke of love and compassion and He took him to paradise
And if that isn't love. Then the ocean is dry.
There's no stars in the sky. And the sparrows can't fly
Yeah, if that isn't love, then Heaven's a myth.
There's no feeling like this if that isn't love
