I Was Born Under A Wand’rin’ Mind.

…..Ok. Who didn’t think of Lee Marvin singing that song?

The song, “I Was Born Under A Wand’rin’ Star” was a No 1 song in the U.K. hit parades in 1970. It came from the stageshow and movie, Paint Your Wagon.

The Bible also makes reference to a wandering star. But it is in reference to false teachers…

Jude 1:13 “They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever”.

Indeed the Bible uses the word several times and in the most cases use it within the context of people who wander from place to place, who never commit, and who spread false teaching and dissent among God’s people.

But this is not the context that I’m thinking of. I am thinking of my thoughts that continually bounce around from subject to subject within the bible, always looking for some things that all link together in a common thread. And when devising these blogs, I can tell you, my mind certainly races around the most unexpected of memories, bible verses, reference books and websites.

So, I see a wandering mind as something that can be a useful thing if used in the right way. Someone once told me that I was “all alone with a crowded mind”.

But this is not necessarily a bad thing. If we have God’s Word as our reference point then being able to wander back and forward through our bibles can be a constructive thing. It is good to learn about the bible and how it has been layed out. For this gives us a deeper meaning into who Christ is and his love and plan for us as Christians.

There are so many examples of characters in the bible who spent a bit of time on their own and pondered the things of God.

Jacob sat with his own thoughts in the camp - Genesis ch32 (24) Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of day.

Gideon worked at the winepress – Judges ch6 (11) Now the Angel of the LORD came and sat under the terebinth tree which was in Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, while his son Gideon threshed wheat in the winepress, in order to hide it from the Midianites. (12) And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him, and said to him, "The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valour!"

Nathaneal under the tree – Gospel of John ch1 (48) Nathanael said to Him, "How do You know me?" Jesus answered and said to him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you."

Wandering minds, properly guided by good teaching, can lead to many new revelations of God. Which then can lead to a deeper relationship with Him. Not that I have any claim to having a deep relationship, or that I’m any way more learned than anyone else. But I do enjoy the flexibility of being able to jump between the stories of Moses to the guiding hand of Jesus. Between the twelve tribes of Israel to Jesus’ disciples preaching through the land. Did you know that there are over 30 references in Genesis that have their completion in the Book of Revelation?

So, I enjoy my wandering mind. And I thank God that I have been given the ability and opportunity to share some thoughts with you.

And I pray that God will be with you as you wander through your own thoughts and your own studies. For our God is a wonderful God. And he will bring us through every single thought, notion and idea.

Amen.

Sometimes we come to life’s crossroads, we view what we think is the end.
But God has a much wider vision, and He knows that it’s only a bend.

The road will go on and get smoother, and after we’ve stopped for a rest.
The path that lies hidden beyond us, is often the path that is best.

So rest and relax and grow stronger. Let go, and let God share your load.
And have faith in a brighter tomorrow. You’ve just come to a bend in the road.
